Join us for a glimpse into an ancient landscape on a guided walk into Long Swamp at Camp Speers YMCA. Formed more than 10,000 years ago as glaciers retreated, Long Swamp is a rare peatland ecosystem that supports a variety of Ericaceous (acid-loving) shrubs, including leatherleaf, early azalea, and huckleberry.
April is an ideal time to “see the shrubs from the trees,” as the canopy has not yet filled in and many shrubs are already in flower. This seasonal window offers a unique opportunity to observe and learn to identify these plants in a location forever protected through efforts of Camp Speers YMCA, Delaware Highlands Conservancy, and public support.
This event is free, but advance registration is requested.
Closed-toe shoes are required. Please sign-in at the Camp Office upon arrival. Dress for the weather. This program includes light to moderate outdoor activity on uneven terrain and boardwalks that may be slick.
